synopsis:
Two recruits on border patrol get taken by surprise when all hell breaks loose around them.
Combining action with emotion and a light-hearted punch-line is a
tricky business, especially if the punch-line should give the audience something to ponder after the last frame has flickered across the screen. It is this challenge that led us to taking on Border Patrol and shaping what might have been the ocumentation of a special effects workshop, into a film with a message.
We knew early on that the time and concentration of the actors would be limited by the fact that everyone had a lot to learn about special effects and safety. Additionally, we had a broad range of effects to play with. So we took the chance at shooting awesome pictures during the workshop and rounded them off with a second day of shooting the embedding storyline of the two recruits.
This helped to put the action into a surreal enclosure, at the same time giving us a wonderful chance to deliver a statement in the very last shot of the movie.

The production originated from one of the special effects seminars
organized by Traum & Wahnsinn with Explose Engineering. In the
course of teaching actors and stuntmen about special effects
techniques and safety, our production team took on the challenge
of capturing their learning experience on video – and shaping it into a short film with a punch line.
The workshop was a grand success, not only enhancing the
participant's know-how, but bringing a great team together for
further productions (e.g. Puppenspiel, 2011).
In this respect, Border Patrol reflects how experiences can lead to conflict, and how those conflicts need to be resolved in order to form friendships. The movie manages to approach this and other topics with a wink – after all, it is easier on the soul to approach the depressingly absurd in a less depressing manner.
